this afternoon I went to Revolver Records, in Phoenix
While they were very nice and seemed to have a lot of good and varied stock, I didn’t really see much that caught my interest except for a copy of Armed Forces by Elvis Costello & The Attractions for $2 (decent quality. needed a good cleaning). I was really in the market for some old Tom Waits, but they only had his more recent records (I like Alice and Blood Money and Bad Like Me, but I am really on the hunt for Heartattack & Vine and Nighthawk’s At The Diner). I found the punk section near the back of the store and after not finding anything that interested me, happened to glance down, spotting a sign with an arrow pointing down ‘soundtracks. 50% off orange stickers’. I get a big kick out of finding soundtracks from movies I like on vinyl. Right away, I could see that Revolver had a goldmine. I found The Hunger, Foxes, Candy, Little Shop Of Horrors, and the original cast recording of A Funny Thing Happened on The Way To The Forum, each of them under $5 each. I also found a reading of The Hobbit in really nice condition, but decided to pass because we already have something similar from the 1977 animated version on vinyl (the box is in bad shape but the records are good and the companion book is in perfect condition. and either way it would have been for my mister, and he said he was content w/ the version we have). I bought the Little Shop of Horrors record for my older brother whose birthday is in April. He and his wife collect records with either sentimental attachment or for decoration, mostly soundtracks (usually musicals for his wife). But we had a cousin who played the voice of Audrey II in a stage production when he was in college and my brother worshiped him. and the A Funny Thing Happened on The Way To The Forum is for my mister. He loves the show and still raves about the time he got to see it in New York when Whoopi Goldberg filled in for Nathan Lane as Pseudolus. The music on Foxes and Candy is pretty bad, but I bought them for the novelty and to use as decoration in the new house. The Hunger is also for novelty value, but also because it is a cult classic and if I needed to, I’m pretty sure I could sell it to a David Bowie, vampire, or cult movie collector for a lot more than I paid for it ($4.99. the most expensive one I bought today). For a little while now, finding the soundtrack for the 1962 version of Lolita has been my holy grail. I don’t know what is actually on the soundtrack, but I love the movie and the artwork and really want it just to display. With all these great soundtrack finds, I thought today would be the day… But no dice.
